THE ALLEY CATS JAZZ BAND

Newcastle Upon Tyne - United Kingdom

Car broke down and a jazz band was formed - 1956/57?
(I found an old newspaper clipping I think it must be from the Evening chronicle - this is what it said)

An old sports car broke down and a jazz band was born. A spot of electrical trouble and a group of musicians got together.

Now they are busy practising, hoping their music will make a new impact on the local jazz world.

It all began when 24-year-old banjo player Bill Wright had a spot of bother wuth his car. Neither he or his 23-year-old friend Joe Errington could cope with the situation. Then along came pianist Alan Pallister, drummer Bob Forster, Chris Hooker with his clarinet and trombonist John Franklin. As the car got first aid treatment a band was born. It was christened "The Alley Cats Jazz Band"

The Alley Cats Jazz Band

The Alley Cats Jazz band played a number of gigs at Ryton Rugby Club and Crawcrook - Emma miners welfare Hall, they developed a large following. Johnny Franklin cut out alley cats for the group - the cats were worn on shirts and sweaters and the fans wanted to wear them as well; so Johnny was kept very busy cutting them all out, he has 150 on back order at one time! - good job he could cut the cat shape out in a matter of seconds! The cats cutouts became a cult items as the fans saw it as a must have item to have at the gigs.
